Kyu-bin (Philip) Hwang, Chairman of XEL LINE and a member of the department's first entering class, received the 15th Proud Hanyang Engineer Award from the College of Engineering at Hanyang University. The ceremony took place on October 23, 2026 at the Seoul campus, preceded by the unveiling of the recipients' relief portraits in the Hall of Fame in the main building of the Engineering Center. This year's award went to two alumni: Chairman Hwang and Tae-gyun Kim, President of KEPCO Engineering & Construction (an Electrical Engineering alumnus).
Hwang entered the Department of Nuclear Engineering in 1958. He went on to earn a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Utah State University and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State University, and worked as a researcher at Ford Motor Company. He then founded TeleVideo in Silicon Valley and took it public on NASDAQ, the first Korean-founded company to do so.
He later served as head of the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce in Silicon Valley, as an advisor on advanced technology to the U.S. President, and as an advisor to Samsung Electronics in information and communication technology. He now leads XEL LINE, a high-speed power line communication technology company.
The Proud Hanyang Engineer Award, established in 2001, honors College of Engineering alumni who have contributed to national and industrial development and to society.
